Two world premieres this weekend in the US

This weekend two of Andrew's latest works are being premiered in the United States. Rhapsody on St Francis will be featured by the New York Staff Band in Washington, followed by another performance on 2 November 2019 in New York at Centennial Memorial Temple in a joint concert with the Cory Band. The East Michigan Divisional Band will also be premiering another work, The Risen King, which is based on Keith and Kristin Getty's song, Come People of the Risen King. The concert, which will see the band share the stage with the Chicago Staff Band, will be on 19 October at Rochester High School Performing Arts Center, Rochester Hills, Michigan.

Andrew has composed a new work for the New York Staff Band, to be featured in their upcoming concert with the world's number one ranked band, Cory on 2 November 2019 at Centennial Memorial Temple. Entitled Rhapsody on St Francis, it is based on the hymn tune of the same name.
Elgin Symphony Orchestra to perform Wainwright works

The Elgin Symphony Orchestra will be performing two of Andrew's works at their annual Christmas concerts this December, Spanish Dance and The Huron Carol, the latter with choir. This will be the fifth consecutive year Andrew has worked with the orchestra. In the past the orchestra has commissioned A Christmas Fantasia, Unto Us, A Joyful Noel and In the Bleak Midwinter.
Spanish Dance in top three sellers on JW Pepper

Andrew's Christmas work Spanish Dance has been announced as one of the top three grossing works in the JW Pepper concert band category for 2018. The work was premiered by the Virtuosi GUS Band and recorded on its CD Christmas Fantasia - The music of Andrew Wainwright. In 2017 Andrew's arrangement of Ukrainian Bell Carol was one of the top three grossing works on JW Pepper for the month of November 2017.
Andrew wins RWCMD Cory Band Composer Competition 2018
Andrew has won 1st prize in the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama Cory Band Composer Competition 2018. Andrew's piece 'The Spirit of St. Louis' was one of three finalists, including Stephen Wood and Matthew Shaw. The competition was judged by Cory Band Conductor Philip Harper, Liz Lane, John Wallace and Nigel Seaman. The piece sets out to describe in less than five minutes the 33-hour journey that saw Charles Lindbergh become the first person to complete a non-stop transatlantic flight. It will recorded commercially by The Cory Band and performed throughout its 2018-19 season, and published by Wright & Round.
Ukrainian Bell Carol hits top three on JW Pepper

Andrew's arrangement for concert band of Ukrainian Bell Carol has been announced as one of the top three grossing works on JW Pepper for the month of November 2017. The piece, which was also performed by New York Philharmonic Brass at their annual Christmas concert, 'Holiday Brass', was recorded by Virtuosi GUS Band on their CD 'Christmas Fantasia'. The piece was also in the top five grossing concert band works of November 2016.

Andrew has been commissioned by New York Philharmonic Brass to arrange two pieces for their annual Christmas concert, 'Holiday Brass'. The concert, which will be hosted by Philip Smith, will be held at David Geffen Hall in New York on Sunday 17 December 2017 and feature guest soloist Doc Severinsen. Andrew is arranging 'Carol of the Bells' and 'Night of Joy' for the occasion.
Andrew wins New York Staff Band composer's contest

Andrew has been announced as the winner of the New York Staff Band's inaugural composers' contest. Andrew's piece, a tone poem entitled Fearless, was nominated as one of three finalists along with Joel Collier and Ruben Schmidt, and voted as the winner by the members of the New York Staff Band. The competition, which was open to anyone, received 31 entries from around the world. Fearless will be recorded by the New York Staff Band on its new CD, which is being recorded in January 2018. The prize also includes a trip to New York for the premiere, which will take place in early 2018.
New orchestral Christmas work to be premiered in Chicago

Andrew has just completed a new commission from the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, voted 2016 Illinois Orchestra of the Year. The work, entitled A Joyful Noel, will be performed as part of the 'Magical Holiday Concert' series on 9 and 10 December 2017 at the Hemmens Cultural Center. A new CD has been released by the Texas Division of The Salvation Army entitled Stand Firm and features the Divisional Band and Chorus, and the youth groups Texas Brass and Lonestar Brass. Three of Andrew's pieces are featured - There's no-one, there's no-one like Jesus, which was written for the Zambia Territorial Music School, I'll follow thee, arranged for the WECC Band in Bermuda, and Texas Celebration, composed for the 25th anniversary of the Texas Division's Music Conservatory in 2016.

Carol of the bells in top five on JW Pepper

Andrew's arrangement of Carol of the bells is in the top five grossing wind band pieces on JW Pepper for November 2016. The arrangement, recorded by Virtuosi GUS Band on its CD Christmas Fantasia, features alongside works by Vaughan Williams, Holst and Strauss in the top five. Illinois Brass Band commissions Andrew for 25th Anniversary

Canadian Staff Band performs Andrew's work to thousands

The Canadian Staff Band has been performing Andrew's Christmas Processional this Christmas, including two performances on 5 December to audiences of around 3,000 at St Paul's Church, Bloor Street, Toronto. The band is also due to perform the work at Roy Thomson Hall, Toronto, at Christmas with The Salvation Army, at which 1,200 people are expected.

Andrew's composition, The Smoke that Thunders, has made it through to the final of the Salford International Composers' Contest. The piece will be played by the Kings Division Brass Band on Wednesday 12 November and is one of five finalists. The Smoke that Thunders, described by 4barsrest website as 'a piece of colonial empire building musicality', which was commissioned for the band's performance at Brass in Concert, and Andrew's arrangement of Khachaturian's Galop from the Masquerade Suite, both contributed to the band's winning performance as part of their own-choice programme.

Four pieces by Andrew Wainwright were featured at the Brass in Concert weekend at The Sage Gateshead on the weekend of 17 and 18 November. Stabat Mater Suite was performed by Cory Band at the World of Brass in Concert on the Saturday night, whilst two new commissions were played by Virtuosi GUS Band in the contest itself the next day - The Smoke that Thunders, which was based on the story of David Livingstone's journey to discover Victoria Falls, and an arrangement of Khachaturian's Galop from the Masquerade Suite. The band also featured Andrew's arrangement of John Rutter's Distant Land as part of its set.

Christmas Fantasia - The Music of Andrew Wainwright has been released on the Doyen label. The CD, featuring Virtuosi GUS Band and Faryl Smith, a finalist in ITV?s television show Britain?s Got Talent, 2008, is a collection of seasonal compositions and arrangements. The Virtuosi GUS Band has recently recorded a Christmas CD of Andrew's music. The band was joined by guest vocal soloist, ITV's Britain's Got Talent star Faryl Smith, who recorded Ave Maria and Silent Night. The recording, which features 16 tracks, will include all of the music in the Andrew Wainwright Christmas Collection series (featured on this website under 'Music'), along with a number of new items. The CD will be on the Doyen label and due for release later in the year. More details of the release will be available on this website in the coming weeks.
Andrew to guest at Portuguese Music School
Andrew has been invited as the special guest to the Portuguese Territorial Music School this summer. Andrew last attended the music school as a delegate in 2004 but will this year lead the band and deliver a number of workshops on musicianship skills and brass playing.

Armed Man to be performed by Black Dyke Band at Sheffield City Hall
Andrew's arrangement of The Armed Man - A Mass for Peace is to be performed by Black Dyke Band and Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus on Saturday 28 April at Sheffield City Hall. Andrew conducts the New York Staff Band and Future All Stars at 125th Anniversary weekend
Andrew was a guest of the New York Staff Band at its recent 125th Anniversary celebrations and was asked to write a piece for the Future All Stars weekend by Bandmaster Ron Waiksnoris. Andrew attended the band's celebration concert on the Thursday night at Carnegie Hall, reviewing the event for SA Bandsman magazine. He was also privileged to conduct the combined bands of the New York Staff Band and Future All Stars in his piece, Fanfare and Theme on Before the Throne on the Friday night at Star Lake Musicamp, following a number of luminaries of the music world who also conducted their own pieces on the night, including Joseph Turrin, Dr. Peter Graham and Lt. Col. Norman Bearcroft. The band was also conducted by Philip Smith (principal trumpet - New York Philharmonic), Derek Smith (former Bandmaster of the NYSB), Philip Cobb (principal trumpet - London Symphony Orchestra), German Staff Bandmaster Heinrich Schmidt and Major John Mott (former Bandmaster of the Household Troops Band). Andrew's piece was also performed by the massed bands at the final concert on the Sunday.
Andrew a guest at the Kenya East Territorial Music School
Andrew has recently returned from Kenya, where he was a member of staff at the first all-brass Territorial Music School in Kenya. Andrew conducted the Goldcrest Band, as well as the 'A' Band and massed bands, including his arrangements of Agnus Dei from the Armed Man and There's no-one, there's no-one like Jesus. He also led the composition group, which numbered 13, and delivered several masterclasses on brass techniques and musicianship.

Andrew has been commissioned by the New York Staff Band to write a piece for the Future All Stars weekend 2012, which is part of the band's 125th anniversary celebrations. The piece, entitled Fanfare and Theme on Before the Throne, will finish the final concert, which will be held at Star Lake camp in late March.

Andrew's arrangement of Karl Jenkins' Stabat Mater has been released on Cory Band's latest CD, Cory in Concert Volume II. The suite, which Andrew co-arranged with Dr. Robert Childs, features five movements from the work and was premiered by Cory Band at the European Brass Band Championships in 2011 in Switzerland. It has since been performed by the band at Symphony Hall, Birmingham and was broadcast on BBC Radio 2.
